The portrait course aims to teach drawing and painting based on the representation of the face.

It starts from scratch, although basic knowledge of drawing is necessary. The anatomy of the head is studied, as well as its great expressive value. Various pictorial techniques are developed throughout the course.

Days of the week: Tuesday and Thursday

Schedule:

  • from 17:00 to 19:00h afternoon schedule
  • from 19:30 to 21:30h evening hours

Conditions of access: 1st year of Painting, Basic Drawing or proof of basic knowledge.

Duration: School year from September to June.

CONTENTS

First course

  • Study of the anatomy of the head: cranial structure and muscular structure.
  • Method for the construction of a face in the three basic positions. Movement, perspective, expression.
  • Learning drawing techniques: pencil, charcoal, sanguine, pastel and Indian ink.
  • Study of the visual schemes for the construction of the face and head based on their structure and proportions.
  • Representation of the volumes of the face from the values of light. Chiaroscuro, lighting and the pictorial illusion of volume.
  • The resemblance and uniqueness in portraiture: the study of individual expression. The portrait and the figure from photography and with a natural model. The self-portrait.

Second, third and fourth year

  • Review of the contents learned in the first course.
  • Elaboration of a personal work inspired by the artists and techniques learned.
  • Self-portrait with mixed techniques
  • Historical approach to portraiture, from classical times, with special emphasis on the development of this theme in the avant-garde of the twentieth century and its evolution to the present day.
  • The ideas of representation, identity and otherness as central concepts in contemporary portraiture.
  • Development and study of different painting techniques throughout the course: pastel, acrylic, oil and mixed techniques.
  • Personal project: Expressive value of the portrait.
